About this partOverview

The power cylinder is the external hydraulic ram that physically pushes or pulls the steering linkage on classic domestic vehicles (1960s–1970s). Mounted between the frame and the steering linkage, it receives high-pressure fluid from the control valve and converts that pressure into linear force at the linkage — the same job a modern integrated rack-and-pinion does in one unit. Common failure symptoms include fluid weeping from the cylinder rod seal, a soft or "mushy" feel at the steering wheel (internal piston bypass), assist that fades during prolonged steering input (worn cylinder bore), and visible damage to the cylinder body or rod.

Each cylinder is fully remanufactured to OE specification. The bore is honed and inspected for scoring, the piston is fitted with new seals, the rod is gauged for straightness and resurfaced if needed, and the rod-end seal is replaced. Every cylinder is hydraulic-tested for internal leakage and full-stroke performance before shipping. These fit vintage linkage systems of this era — verify your application in the fitment table.

Frequently asked questions4 questions
Should I replace the control valve at the same time?
Strongly recommended. The valve and cylinder are a matched pair — both are likely to be 50+ years old, both wear in the same hydraulic environment, and you’re already paying the labor to drain and bleed the system. Replacing one component into a worn opposite is asking for a return visit.
What fluid should I use?
Type F ATF for most vintage applications of this era. Modern automatic-transmission fluids will swell and degrade the rubber seals in these old systems. Use period-correct Type F ATF.
Are the mounting brackets included?
No — brackets vary widely across applications and are typically still serviceable. Reuse your originals after cleaning and inspecting for cracks. If your brackets are damaged or missing, source from a vintage parts specialist.
Can this be rebuilt again in 10 years?
Yes. These are remanufactured hydraulic cylinders, not throwaway parts. If a future seal kit becomes available, a competent hydraulic shop can re-seal the cylinder. Worth knowing — these vintage parts get harder to find every year.
Why buy remanufactured?Built to OE spec

Why buy remanufactured?

Remanufactured doesn’t mean used. Every unit starts as a returned core, gets disassembled to the bare housing, inspected against OE tolerances, and rebuilt with 100% new seals, bearings, and wear components. The result is a part that performs to factory spec at a fraction of factory cost — with a warranty to back it up.

Up to 40%

less than new

Same OE-spec fit and function as a new part, at a fraction of the price.

100%

tested before shipping

Every unit is bench- or hydraulic-tested for flow, leakage, torque, or pressure before it leaves the line.

Warranty

on every unit

Backed against defects in materials and workmanship. If something fails, we make it right.

Warranty & returns1-year coverage

Every Score Auto Parts component is covered by a 1-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase. Warranty is void if the part is installed on a vehicle not listed in the fitment table, or modified after purchase.

Returns accepted within 30 days for unopened, uninstalled parts. Core deposits are refunded upon receipt of your old part in rebuildable condition.
