How to Replace a Power Steering Pump — Driveway Job, 2-3 Hours

A power steering pump replacement is one of the most accessible DIY repairs on most vehicles. Here's the full procedure, what tools you actually need, and the four mistakes that cause the new pump to fail within a month.

A power steering pump replacement looks intimidating because the pump sits in the middle of a belt routing and connects to two pressurized hoses. In reality it's one of the most accessible bolt-on repairs on most vehicles — 2-3 hours in a driveway with basic tools — and the cost difference between DIY and a shop is typically $150-$300 in labor savings. This guide walks the full procedure plus the four mistakes that kill the new pump.

What you need

Tools (basic):

  • Socket set, both metric and SAE (depending on vehicle) — typically 8-19mm
  • Wrenches in the same sizes
  • A long pry bar or breaker bar
  • Drain pan (1-quart minimum)
  • Funnel
  • Optional but recommended: serpentine belt tool, power steering pulley puller (some vehicles), turkey baster or fluid extractor

Parts:

  • New or remanufactured power steering pump for your vehicle
  • New high-pressure hose (recommended if original is over 5 years old; the high-pressure line is the most common failure point after the pump itself)
  • Fresh power steering fluid (use the type specified in your owner's manual — Dexron III, Mercon V, ATF+4, Honda PSF, and dedicated PSF are all different and not interchangeable on every vehicle)
  • A few feet of clean shop rag

Safety:

  • Wheel chocks
  • Jack and jack stands (if pump access requires lifting the front)

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

Pull the negative terminal first. This isn't strictly required for a pump swap on most vehicles, but if your power steering system shares a wire harness with the airbag or steering position sensor (common on newer vehicles), a disconnected battery prevents fault codes.

Step 2: Drain the reservoir

Use a turkey baster or fluid extractor to pull as much old fluid out of the reservoir as you can. This saves you 12-16 oz of fluid spillage during the hose disconnect step.

Set the recovered fluid aside — you'll be discarding it anyway. Old power steering fluid is dark, full of small metal particles, and smells slightly burned. Don't reuse it.

Step 3: Locate the pump and identify the hoses

The power steering pump is belt-driven, mounted to the front or side of the engine block, with two hoses attached:

  • Low-pressure return hose (larger diameter, usually rubber, secured with hose clamps) — runs from the reservoir to the pump
  • High-pressure feed hose (smaller diameter, usually braided steel or hard metal line, secured with a threaded fitting) — runs from the pump to the steering gear box or rack

Some vehicles have the reservoir mounted directly to the pump (one piece); others have the reservoir remote-mounted with the return line connecting them.

Step 4: Relieve the belt tension

Locate the serpentine belt tensioner — usually a spring-loaded idler pulley on a swinging arm. Apply a long ratchet or serpentine belt tool to the tensioner bolt and rotate it to release tension on the belt.

Slip the belt off the power steering pulley. You don't need to remove the belt completely from the engine; just route it around the pump pulley.

If your vehicle has a manual-tensioned alternator-style adjustment instead of a spring tensioner, loosen the adjusting bolt and the pivot bolt and slide the pump toward the engine to drop tension.

Step 5: Disconnect the high-pressure hose

The high-pressure fitting is typically a 5/8" or 11/16" tube nut. Place a drain pan under the fitting and use a flare-nut wrench (or a regular open-end wrench if you have to) to loosen the nut.

Fluid will leak as you back the fitting off — let it drain into the pan. Once disconnected, plug or tape the open end of the high-pressure line so dirt can't enter.

Step 6: Disconnect the return hose

Loosen the hose clamp at the pump return port and pull the rubber hose off. More fluid will drain.

Plug or pinch the return hose end to prevent gravity-feed from the reservoir if your reservoir is mounted above the pump.

Step 7: Remove the pump mounting bolts

The pump is held to the engine by 2-4 bolts, typically 12-14mm. Some vehicles have a back-side bracket that requires a wrench from underneath. Remove all bolts and lift the pump free.

If the pump has a pressed-on pulley and the pulley needs to transfer to the new pump (sometimes the pump comes without a pulley), you need a power steering pulley puller. Most auto parts stores rent these for free with a deposit. Don't try to hammer the pulley off — you'll bend the new pump's shaft.

Step 8: Install the new pump

Bolt the new pump in place. Torque mounting bolts to spec (typically 15-25 ft-lb for most pumps; check your service manual). If you transferred the pulley, press it back onto the new pump shaft using a pulley installer (also rentable) — never hammer.

Reconnect the high-pressure hose first, then the return hose. Tighten the high-pressure fitting to 18-25 ft-lb (don't over-tighten; you'll deform the seat and create a leak). Secure the return hose with a fresh clamp if the old one was rusted.

Step 9: Re-tension the belt

Route the belt back over the power steering pulley. Rotate the tensioner back to apply pressure, then release slowly until the belt is taut. Verify the belt is correctly seated in every pulley groove around the routing.

For manual-tension setups, slide the pump outward to take up belt slack and torque the adjustment bolt to spec while holding pressure on the belt with a pry bar.

Step 10: Fill and bleed

This is where most pumps die early. Bleeding is critical.

  1. Fill the reservoir to the COLD line with the correct fluid type.
  2. Reconnect the battery.
  3. Crack the high-pressure fitting at the pump just enough to allow air to escape (have a rag ready for fluid).
  4. With the engine off, turn the steering wheel slowly lock-to-lock 10-15 times. Watch the fluid level drop as the system fills. Top off as it drops.
  5. Tighten the high-pressure fitting.
  6. Start the engine and let it idle. Top off fluid as it drops. Do NOT turn the wheel yet.
  7. With the engine idling, slowly turn the wheel lock-to-lock 5-10 times. Keep watching the fluid level.
  8. Stop the engine. Top off to the HOT line.
  9. Start the engine and listen — a few seconds of whining is normal as residual air clears. Persistent loud whining after 30 seconds means there's still air in the system or the pump itself has a problem.

The four mistakes that kill the new pump

1. Wrong fluid type. Power steering fluid is vehicle-specific. Honda uses a unique PSF that other fluids don't replace. Some Hondas, Acuras, and Chryslers cannot tolerate ATF substitution and will fail within months. Always check the owner's manual or the reservoir cap for the specified fluid.

2. Skipped or rushed bleed. Air pockets in the high-pressure circuit cause cavitation that destroys the pump's vanes within hours of operation. Symptoms: persistent whine after install, stiff steering at idle, foamy fluid in the reservoir. The fix is to repeat the bleed procedure — slowly, with the engine off for the first pass.

3. Old contaminated fluid not flushed. If you only swap the pump without flushing the rack and lines, the old fluid (loaded with metal particles from the dying pump) re-circulates and contaminates the new pump's seals and bearings. To flush: disconnect the return line at the reservoir, route it to a catch pan, fill the reservoir continuously while turning the wheel lock-to-lock. Continue until clean fluid runs out the return line.

4. Reused failed high-pressure hose. A high-pressure hose that's leaking, kinked, or internally collapsed restricts flow and overworks the new pump. If the hose is over 5 years old or shows any signs of damage (cracks at the fittings, swelling, weeping), replace it. Most are $30-$60 and the swap is a 10-minute extra step.

Test the result

Start the engine. Listen — should be silent or near-silent. Turn the wheel lock-to-lock at idle — steering effort should be light through the full range with no spots of resistance. Reverse for a few feet — confirm no leaks at the new pump or hoses. Drive the car for 10-15 minutes, varying steering input, then check fluid level and look for leaks.

If the pump whines, has a flat spot, or leaks immediately, recheck the bleed first. If symptoms persist after a full re-bleed, the pump may be defective — most reputable rebuilders include warranty coverage on remanufactured pumps and will replace it.
