About this partOverview

On classic domestic vehicles (1960s–1970s muscle, sedans, and trucks), the power-steering control valve is a separately-mounted hydraulic spool that sits in the linkage between the pitman arm and center link. Steering wheel input physically moves the spool, which routes high-pressure fluid from the pump to one side of an external power cylinder, which then pushes or pulls the linkage to assist steering. This is a vintage hydraulic system with no electronic components — every part is mechanical. Common failure symptoms include power assist that works in one direction but not the other (worn spool or scored bore), continuous fluid leak from the valve body (failed seals), and a "kick" or pull when transitioning between left and right input.

Each control valve is fully remanufactured to original-equipment specification. The valve body is disassembled, the spool is inspected for scoring and lapped or replaced as needed, all hydraulic seals and O-rings are replaced with 100% new components, and the centering springs are tested for free length. Every valve is hydraulic-tested for centering, internal leakage, and assist response in both directions before it ships. These units fit the classic muscle-car and full-size sedan applications of 1965–1975 — verify your vehicle in the fitment list.

Frequently asked questions4 questions
Will this work with the power cylinder I have, or do I need to replace both?
If your power cylinder is leak-free and functioning, the valve will work with it. However, the cylinder and valve share the same age and wear environment — if the valve failed at 50+ years old, the cylinder is likely close. Inspect for cylinder rod scoring and seal leaks before deciding.
What fluid should I use?
Most vintage applications of this era specified Type F ATF (NOT modern automatic-transmission fluids). Using modern fluid in these old systems will damage seals within months. Use Type F ATF or a modern Type F-compatible equivalent — these are still produced for restoration applications.
My original car has the entire linkage in pieces — what else do I need?
These vintage systems use 4 main hydraulic parts: pump, hoses, control valve, power cylinder. All four must be in good condition for the system to work. We sell the valve and the cylinder separately; check Power Steering Pump for the pump. Hoses are best sourced from a vintage-specialty supplier — modern replacements often have the wrong fittings.
Can I bypass this and convert to manual steering?
Mechanically, yes — many restorers do convert. But manual steering requires a different center link, removed power cylinder, capped pump (or removed), and significant steering effort (especially at low speed). If you want the period-correct hydraulic feel, replace the valve and cylinder rather than convert.
Why buy remanufactured?Built to OE spec

Why buy remanufactured?

Remanufactured doesn’t mean used. Every unit starts as a returned core, gets disassembled to the bare housing, inspected against OE tolerances, and rebuilt with 100% new seals, bearings, and wear components. The result is a part that performs to factory spec at a fraction of factory cost — with a warranty to back it up.

Up to 40%

less than new

Same OE-spec fit and function as a new part, at a fraction of the price.

100%

tested before shipping

Every unit is bench- or hydraulic-tested for flow, leakage, torque, or pressure before it leaves the line.

Warranty

on every unit

Backed against defects in materials and workmanship. If something fails, we make it right.

Warranty & returns1-year coverage

Every Score Auto Parts component is covered by a 1-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase. Warranty is void if the part is installed on a vehicle not listed in the fitment table, or modified after purchase.

Returns accepted within 30 days for unopened, uninstalled parts. Core deposits are refunded upon receipt of your old part in rebuildable condition.
