Most common Honda services
- CV axles. Accord / Civic / CR-V / Pilot / Odyssey CV axles last 100k-150k miles in normal use. Honda axle boots are durable but the joints themselves wear with mileage like any other application.
- Power steering pump. Accord and Pilot pumps wear by 100k-180k miles. Whining at idle with the wheel turned + slight leaking are the leading indicators. Use of non-Honda PSF accelerates failure significantly.
- Rack-and-pinion. Accord and CR-V racks develop inner tie rod wear + occasional fluid leaks by 120k-180k miles.
- Brake booster. Older Accord and Pilot brake boosters develop diaphragm leaks past 150k miles. Hard pedal that comes and goes is the symptom.
Popular Honda models in service
Accord (rack + CV axles + power steering pump), Civic (CV axles + power steering pump), CR-V (CV axles + rack), Pilot (CV axles + power steering + brake booster), Odyssey (CV axles + power steering + rack), Ridgeline (CV axles + power steering), Element (CV axles), Fit (CV axles + rack).
Notes worth knowing
Honda PSF (Genuine Honda Power Steering Fluid) is required on virtually all Honda hydraulic power steering applications. Substituting ATF or Dexron causes seal swelling, fluid degradation, and pump cavitation that destroys the pump within months. Always check the owner's manual or reservoir cap before topping off. Honda Civic Hybrid, Insight, and most newer Honda/Acura vehicles use electric power steering and have no hydraulic pump or fluid — verify by looking for a belt-driven pump and a fluid reservoir.
Common questions
- Can I use ATF in my Honda power steering?
- No — Honda specifically calls for Honda PSF (Genuine Honda Power Steering Fluid) on hydraulic-assist applications. Using ATF / Dexron / Mercon causes seal swelling, fluid breakdown, and rapid pump failure. The cost difference is small ($10-15 per quart) and the consequence of substitution is a destroyed pump. Always use the spec'd fluid.
- How long do Honda CV axles last?
- Typically 100,000-150,000 miles on most Honda applications. Accord and CR-V axles are widely considered some of the more durable in the segment. Boot tears and clicking on tight turns are the universal early-warning signs — catch them early and you can often re-boot the joint instead of replacing the whole axle.
