Dodge parts.

Dodge / Ram parts cover the legacy Dodge cars (Charger, Magnum, Caravan) and the Ram pickup line that split off the brand in 2009 but is still cataloged under Dodge for many older vehicles. Ram 1500 / 2500 / 3500 trucks generate most of the heavy-duty volume — steering gear boxes, power steering pumps, and brake boosters across the 5.7L Hemi and Cummins diesel platforms.

Most common Dodge/Ram services

  1. Steering gear box. Ram 2500 / 3500 — especially Cummins-equipped trucks — develop sector shaft play after 100k-150k miles. Wander, on-center slack, and clunking on turn input are the diagnostic symptoms.
  2. Power steering pump. 5.7L Hemi-equipped Ram and Charger pumps wear out in the 100k-150k range. Whining at idle with the wheel turned + slight fluid weeping at the pump are the leading indicators.
  3. CV axles. Caravan / Grand Caravan / Town & Country (sister-vehicle minivans) use FWD CV axles that wear by 80k-120k miles. Family-vehicle use accelerates wear.
  4. Brake booster vacuum pump. 6.7L Cummins trucks use a dedicated vacuum pump that wears 80k-150k miles. Same failure mode as Powerstroke applications — hard pedal + warning lamp.

Popular Dodge/Ram models in service

Ram 1500 / 2500 / 3500 (gear box + power steering + vacuum pump on diesel), Charger (rack-and-pinion + power steering pump), Magnum (same as Charger platform), Challenger (rack-and-pinion), Caravan / Grand Caravan (CV axles + rack-and-pinion), Durango (gear box on older / rack on newer), Dakota (gear box), Nitro (CV axles), Journey (CV axles + power steering).

Notes worth knowing

The Ram nameplate became its own brand in 2009, but for parts purposes Ram trucks 2002-2018 are widely cataloged under Dodge. ATF+4 is the specified fluid for Chrysler/Dodge/Ram power steering on most applications — it's a different formulation than Dexron or Mercon and is not interchangeable on every vehicle. The Cummins-equipped Ram 2500 / 3500 vacuum pump is mounted at the back of the engine block driven off the cam — access is moderate but the unit itself is straightforward to swap once you have a wrench on it.

Common questions

Can I use Dexron in my Ram power steering?
No — Chrysler/Dodge/Ram applications specifically call for ATF+4, which is a different friction-modifier blend. Using Dexron can cause seal swelling, leaks, and accelerated pump wear. Always verify against the owner's manual or the reservoir cap before topping off.
Why does my Ram 2500 wander on the highway?
Most commonly a worn steering gear box (sector shaft slack). Could also be worn tie rod ends, idler arm, or pitman arm — get under the truck and check each linkage joint for play before assuming the gear box. If linkage is tight and play is internal to the box, replace the gear box.
