About this partOverview

Your pitman arm is the steel forging that connects the steering gear box’s sector shaft to the center link (or drag link, on solid-axle setups). Every input from the steering wheel passes through this arm before reaching the tie rods — meaning any play in the pitman-arm taper, splines, or sector-shaft mounting translates directly to vague, wandering steering. Common failure symptoms include excessive on-center play (more than 1 inch at the rim before the wheels move), a clunk when transitioning between left and right input at parking-lot speeds, and uneven tire wear traced to a wandering toe.

Each pitman arm is remanufactured to OE specification. The forging is inspected for cracks (dye-penetrant testing on heavy-duty applications), the splined bore is checked against OE tolerance, and the tapered output stud is gauged for wear. Heavy-duty arms for trucks include a renewed ball stud and dust boot. Every arm is shot-blasted and finished with a corrosion-resistant coating before shipping.

Frequently asked questions4 questions
Why is the master spline orientation important?
The pitman arm has a "master spline" (one wider tooth) that aligns with a matching gap in the sector shaft. This ensures the arm sits at the correct angle when the steering wheel is centered. Installing 1 spline off will leave your steering wheel cocked when driving straight — and on splined gear boxes there’s no fine adjustment to correct it.
Do I really need an alignment after replacing just the pitman arm?
Yes. Any change to a steering or suspension component changes toe geometry. Running on un-aligned toe wears tires off in weeks and stresses the steering system. Alignment is non-negotiable.
Is this a heavy-duty pitman arm?
Check the fitment table and the part number on your original. Many heavy-duty trucks use a distinct forging style and spline count specific to their steering gear box manufacturer. We list compatibility by vehicle in the fitment guide — if your vehicle is in the list, the arm matches.
Can I reuse my old castle nut and cotter pin?
The castle nut is reusable if the threads are clean and undamaged. The cotter pin must ALWAYS be new — a reused cotter pin can shear under load and is the most common cause of a pitman arm coming loose. New cotter pin is included with this shipment.
Why buy remanufactured?Built to OE spec

Why buy remanufactured?

Remanufactured doesn’t mean used. Every unit starts as a returned core, gets disassembled to the bare housing, inspected against OE tolerances, and rebuilt with 100% new seals, bearings, and wear components. The result is a part that performs to factory spec at a fraction of factory cost — with a warranty to back it up.

Up to 40%

less than new

Same OE-spec fit and function as a new part, at a fraction of the price.

100%

tested before shipping

Every unit is bench- or hydraulic-tested for flow, leakage, torque, or pressure before it leaves the line.

Warranty

on every unit

Backed against defects in materials and workmanship. If something fails, we make it right.

Warranty & returns1-year coverage

Every Score Auto Parts component is covered by a 1-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship from the date of purchase. Warranty is void if the part is installed on a vehicle not listed in the fitment table, or modified after purchase.

Returns accepted within 30 days for unopened, uninstalled parts. Core deposits are refunded upon receipt of your old part in rebuildable condition.
